I hope this post inspires your green side and to take that extra wasted space for a herb garden of your own.

Two Reasons I took on my own Herb Garden

First of all, I have an ugly rock bed in which I was not about to spend hours clearing each individual stone out.

The task of picking weeds out of it has been tedious enough. I knew I could make this wasted space into something beautiful.

Everyone I asked for ideas suggested a water feature, but with the canal in my backyard, I had plenty of water.

Second reasoning for this creative project, was I found out how much money I was wasting on buying herbs!! This gave me the perfect idea for what to plant.

I read an article about planting herbs in pots, and that was all the inspiration I needed!

Herbs are easy to plant and reproduce over and over again. So why have I been wasting so much money at the store on these?

And herbs taste so much better when they are fresh picked from the garden. The flavor is fresher and stronger. It makes all the difference in your recipes.

Using resources around the home

I found 6 plain pots at Lowe’s for about $2 a piece. There is leftover paint that I used for my front door. I have enough to prime them and then paint them a pretty teal blue.

This is a potential 3rd reason for this project. To find an opportunity in which to bring the accent color of my house to another feature. I love the pop of blue and love when it is spread around without it being so obvious.

I need to be careful with my paint though. The possibly of painting everything teal makes me giddy. Good thing my hubby slows my impulses down.

Location of the Wasted Space for a Herb Garden

The rock bed happens to be between my two patios.

There is a potential for grass to be grown here, but because of the size, it is not a practical solution. The rocks seem to be a permanent structure in which I just want to spruce up.

After painting, I choose 6 herbs: Cilantro, dill, oregano, parsley, basil & mint. All herbs that I use on a weekly basis (the mint is especially for the holidays and the occasional mojito).

You choose the herbs that will work best for you. The key to this project is growing plants that you will continuously use and trim. If you won’t cook with them on a daily basis then don’t grow them.

Easy & Quick Assembly for any Herb Garden

I plant them nicely in each of their pots and spread them out among the rocks. Then I pick the last of my weeds around them and top them off with a couple more bags of fresh rocks.

They add color and versatility to an unused space, and everybody that comes over thinks I have a green thumb. I love how this works both ways.

Now go find wasted space in your yard to plant your own herb garden!
